How to be a Successful Business Woman, as told by Kacey Musgraves!

This blog post is going to take a bit of different turn than normal, a musical turn if you will.

Have you ever been listening to a band, or artist, and thought, “WOW, they are really saying everything I’m thinking!”

That person for me, is Kacey Musgraves!

Now, I get country is not for everyone, but trust me when I say, these songs ARE!

So much so, that Kacey is telling us everything we need to know to be successful business women, and she doesn’t even know it! So thank you Kacey Musgaves!

  1. Cup of Tea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0SJsdRYWgo

First things first, if you’re going to be in business, either working in a big corporate job, or you want to open your own business and be an entrepreneur, the first and most important thing you have to know, is that you will NEVER be everyone’s cup of tea! To piggyback on that, don’t even try to be. If you set out to make everyone happy, all you’re going to do is disappoint them, and yourself, because YOU.WILL.FAIL. The sooner you come to terms with the fact that you will not, cannot, be everyone’s favorite, and not everyone will like you, the more successful you’ll be!

  2. Follow Your Arrow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ8xqyoZXCc

If you’re entire business plan, is to copy what other businesses are already doing, you are starting off on the wrong foot. What will make your business grow, (and what makes you grow as a professional,) is to DO YOU! Don’t copy other people. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, or be weird. Put your own spin on things, and show your customers what makes you DIFFERENT and what sets you apart from your competitors.

  3. Biscuits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGIUtLO_x8g

I wish listening to this song could be a prerequisite before submitting an application to me.  In fact, if we could all just give this song a listen, the world would be a much better place! The moral of the story here is to MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, and that if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all! You aren’t growing your business, doing your job, or bettering yourself if you’re worried about the gossip in the office, what the competitor is doing, or who kissed who. This song reminds me to keep my priorities in order, focus on ME, my goals, and don’t concern myself with gossip. Every company has the coworker that is found talking down upon someone else. DON’T BE THAT GIRL! As Kacey says, “pouring salt in my sugar won’t make yours any sweeter.” Work on BUILDING UP your co-workers, not tearing them down. Your team is only as strong as the weakest link.

  4. High Horse https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbNDJRwXKGc

Check your ego at the door. Sure, you may be top dog at your company, making money, and crushing goals on the daily, but the second you let that go to your head, is the second you lose. If you get to a point where you are no longer eager to learn, and instead you think you are always right, and always know best… I bet your success story will quickly be meeting a downward spiral. Don’t be egotistical, not only for yourself and your own personal growth, but for your employees and your overall leadership goals. Get off your high horse, and come on back down to earth. You are NOT the best, so keep striving to be better.

  5. Pageant Material https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uN5Ge-ICDM

This song is about how her mom wanted her to be a pageant girl, but that’s now who she was. When you are a woman, there are certain things that are “expected of you.” When you’re a woman in business, there is a whole other list of expectations.. When you’re an entrepreneur, you guessed it, a whole new set of things “you should be.” Here is your reminder, to throw all of those expectations to the curb and set your OWN EXPECTATIONS for yourself and your company. Don’t worry about molding yourself and changing who you are, in order to “look or act a certain way.” As long as you have a moral compass, and make ethical decisions, BE YOU, regardless of you the world wants you to be.

  6. Wonder Woman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYm0g2oxdUw

Girl, you can’t do it all! You are not wonder woman, and it’s okay to admit you need help. Learn to delegate, learn to fail with grace. Learn to let other people help you, in fact, make it your goal to hire and lead people who are BETTER than you in certain areas, so that you can delegate these tasks!

  7. This Town https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ic8_1vzAtY

Be kind, ya’ll! No one likes a leader who is RUDE to customers or employees. Practice honest business, and be transparent. If you’re trying to hide things, be secretive, or slimey, people are going to find out, and you’re going to run your business or your career into the ground. It doesn’t matter if you’re in a one horse town, or New York City, word of mouth means EVERYTHING. Your reputation is a hard thing to build back up.

  8. Rainbow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OFv566mj7s

Everyone knows that life is not easy. Well life in business, is even harder. There are going to be bad days. Bad weeks. Bad months. There are going to be times where you feel like everything you do is truly failing and you are weathering this storm alone. Remember to stop and breathe, and that “this too shall pass.” One day, you’ll stop and realize that you made it through the storm, you’re back up on your feet, and you’re making it!

  9. Oh, What a World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tgspkNRIcc

Remember, to have FUN!!! Life is so short, way too short to be doing anything you don’t WANT TO BE DOING! “WORK” takes up a huge chunk of our time, so it is imperative that we ENJOY our day to day life. I’m not saying everyday is going to be rainbows and butterflies, (lol, get it Kacey fans? 😉 ) but the majority of your work life should be invigorating, uplifting, and rewarding. If you’re just going thru the motions, & trading time for money, get out fast!

  10. Velvet Elvis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsOe_K3UR0M

I can’t find any comparison to this song vs. being a business woman, but this is my favorite Kacey song, so it makes the list! Give it a listen!
